Move and play

  1. Press Space to play or pause.
  2. Move the playhead with the left and right arrows: one frame. With Shift: one second.
  3. Zoom with = and - (or Ctrl+= and Ctrl+-), at the playhead. Shift+Z fits the whole video.
  4. Select a clip and use its toolbar, or right-click it.
  5. Point at the cut between two clips and click the + to add a transition. See Transitions.

Snapping

  • Drag a clip or its edge. It sticks to the nearest point: the playhead, a clip edge, a caption edge, a beat or a marker.
  • A line and a label in the ruler say what it snapped to.
  • Hold Alt during the drag to place it freely. N turns snapping off or on.
  • Drag toward the left or right edge of the timeline: the view scrolls.
  • Esc during a drag puts the item back.

Move between rows

Drag an item up or down. An outline shows where it lands and the ruler says what will happen:

Select several clips and drag one: they all move together.

Undo

  • Ctrl+Z undoes. Ctrl+Shift+Z or Ctrl+Y redoes.
  • Each drag is one undo step.
  • History lists this session's steps and the saved versions you can go back to.
9 more details
  • Advanced mode shows more tools (cut, slip, roll and slide tools, keyframes). The mode you pick is remembered in every project.
  • The main row is magnetic: trimming, moving or deleting a clip closes the gap. See Trim, split and delete.
  • Advanced: drag the top edge of the timeline to make it taller or shorter. Double-click the edge to go back. It is remembered on this computer.
  • Advanced: drag a named track's header up or down to change the order of tracks.
  • The playhead line can be dragged anywhere you see the ↔ pointer.
  • Drag a photo or video from Media onto the preview to add it as an overlay at the playhead.
  • A project is saved as you edit. The top bar shows Saved on this computer.
  • Messages appear in a small pill at the top of the editor. A long one has More, a problem has Details. They go away by themselves, or close them.
  • Press ? in the editor for every key. See Keyboard shortcuts.
