Split a clip
- Select the clip.
- Put the playhead where you want the cut.
- Press S (or Ctrl+B), or press Split in the clip's toolbar.
Captions that sit across the cut are split with it.
Trim a clip
| Do this | Result |
|---|---|
| Drag the start or end of the clip | Shortens or lengthens it. The label shows Drag to trim |
| Press [ or ] | Trims the start or end to the playhead, or extends it into unused footage |
| Press Q or W | Trims the start or end of the clip under the playhead to the playhead and closes the gap |
| Hold Ctrl while trimming | Does the opposite of the usual: see the table below |
If a clip cannot go further, the message says that it cannot be trimmed further that way: the footage has run out.
The main row closes gaps (Magnet)
The main row is magnetic, as in CapCut: clips stay together.
| Magnet on (Simple, and Advanced by default) | Magnet off (Advanced) | |
|---|---|---|
| Trim, move or delete a clip | The gap closes; later clips follow | A blank space stays |
| Drag or trim with Ctrl | The gap stays ("Ctrl keeps the gap") | The gap closes ("Ctrl closes the gap") |
| Delete or move the first clip | The video still starts at 0:00, no black start | A blank space stays at the start |
In Advanced, turn it off and on with the Magnet button in the V1 Story track header. It is remembered on this computer.
Delete a clip
| Do this | Result |
|---|---|
| Delete or Backspace | Deletes the clip and closes the gap |
| Shift+Delete | Deletes the clip and keeps the blank space (in Advanced with Magnet off, also Delete, leave a gap in the clip menu) |
Black on purpose, and blank space
- Want black between clips? More › Add black… puts a black clip before the selected clip (1 s to start). Also in Media › + Add › Black clip.
- Blank space plays as black and silence. Click it, then Close gap (or Delete).
- With Magnet off, Add blank space… in the clip's menu adds a gap before a clip.
- A tiny gap of a frame or two shows as a black flash. Edivo marks it and offers Close it.
What moves along
- Titles, pictures and captions on a clip move with it when the main row closes or opens a gap.
- Markers move with what lies under them. Deleting a part removes the markers inside it; a marker at its end stays with what follows.
4 more details
- A locked clip cannot be trimmed, split, moved or deleted: unlock it first.
- Clip sound follows its clip. Trim the clip, not the sound, unless you used Separate sound.
- Advanced mode adds tools: C cut, Y shift footage (slip), R move cut (roll), U move clip (slide). See Move a cut, a clip or its footage.
- Moves snap to points in the ruler. See Timeline basics.
