Captions from speech

Free, no account. Your footage is not sent anywhere.

Add captions

  1. Open Text in the left rail and go to Captions.
  2. Press Add captions from speech. The first time, it downloads the speech model (one time only; Edivo asks first).
    • Edivo finds the spoken language. To set it first, press Change next to Spoken language.
  3. Pick a look under Caption styles.
  4. Or use Import a caption file… for an .srt or .vtt.

Edit them

  • Select a caption and press Edit captions to fix words and timing.
  • Edivo marks words the speech model was unsure about. Check them.
  • Wrong language? Under the captions, Heard in … › Change hears the speech again in the language you pick. If Edivo wasn't sure, it asks Is this …? with Choose.
  • Spoken word colour highlights the word being spoken (needs captions from speech, not from a file).

Captions on one clip

Some clips carry their own captions, which play with that clip and follow its trims and speed.

  1. Select the clip.
    • On the clip's toolbar: More › Captions on this clip… (Simple).
    • In the inspector (Ctrl+Alt+I, both modes): the Video tab, row Captions on this clip.
  2. Click a caption. The playhead jumps there and you can type.
  3. Enter saves, Esc cancels, Tab goes to the next one. The bin deletes one; Remove all asks first.

Each change is one Undo step.

Captions for many clips at once

Select the clips and press Clean up, then switch on Captions from speech. See Clean up several clips.

5 more details
  • Captions can mishear words, names and accents. Always check them before you post.
  • If a better speech model is on this computer, Redo with the model hears the speech again and replaces the captions. Undo brings them back.
  • No speech in the video? Import a caption file, or add a title instead.
  • For more languages see Subtitle languages.
  • Clip captions can be edited and deleted, not split, joined or retimed. A caption trimmed off the clip doesn't play; the list says how many.
