An interview on a lav mic and a camera mic, or a voice-over next to camera sound: Match voice makes them sound like one recording.
Steps
- Right-click the clip whose voice sounds different and choose Match voice…. It is also in the inspector's Audio tab (Ctrl+Alt+I): Match voice to another clip.
- In Sound like, pick the clip with the mic you want. The clip before it is picked first.
- Keep Match loudness too on to even out the level as well. Set Strength (100% matches fully).
- Press Match voice, then play the two clips one after the other.
- Check Voice difference, before → after: about 1–2 dB sounds alike.
| After matching | What it does |
|---|---|
| Match voice switch | Off plays the clip as it was, to compare |
| Strength | Softens the match (one Undo step each time) |
| Match again | Measures again, for example against another clip |
| Remove | Takes the match away |
6 more details
- It adds a gentle tone curve (at most 6 bands, ±12 dB each) and a level change to this clip only. You hear it in the preview and get the same in the export.
- It matches the average tone of the speech. It can't remove echo, noise or distortion, or bring back sound the mic never picked up.
- Two different people keep their own voice: only the overall tone is matched.
- It measures up to 3 minutes of the clip, using only the parts with speech.
- Splitting a matched clip keeps the match on both parts, and detaching its sound takes the match along. Sound separated into stems starts without it, and after replacing the clip's footage the match stays but was measured on the old sound: match again.
- The AI can do the same for you ("make the two mics sound the same").
