Volume and fades

Works on video clips, songs and voice recordings. No credits.

Fade in and out

  1. Select the clip or song.
  2. Press Fade in its toolbar (Fade in and out).
  3. Set Fade in and Fade out. It applies as you change it.

Change the volume

  1. Select the clip or song and press Volume (Volume, fades and mute).
  2. Set Volume.
  3. Mute turns the sound off. Press it again to turn the sound back on.
  4. Reset returns to the original level.

On the timeline (Advanced)

  • Hover over a sound block: a level line appears. Drag it up or down ("−11.5 dB · Volume"). Hold Shift for fine steps.
  • Drag the round handle in a top corner inwards for a fade ("1.5 s · Fade in"). The fade shows as a shaded corner.
  • Each drag is one Undo step.

Let the music dip under speech

  • In the volume menu, turn on Lower under speech: the music dips while someone talks.
  • It needs speech in the video. Otherwise it says nothing in this video talks yet and keeps the setting for later.
6 more details
  • Audio in the left rail has mixing and noise reduction. Match volume sets each chosen clip's gain so they sound about equally loud. It measures average level (RMS), not LUFS. The export sets the final loudness (Custom export › Loudness).
  • To edit a video's sound apart from its picture, use Separate sound.
  • To make a song end with the video, use Fit music to the video.
  • Every change can be undone with Ctrl+Z.
  • Not sure the mix is loud enough? See Is my sound too quiet or too loud?
  • To make a voice deep or a song slowed + reverb, see Voice and audio effects.
