Pick the tool
Choose it in the timeline's tools bar, or press its key.
| Tool | Key | Drag | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move cut (roll) | R | A cut between two clips | One clip gets longer, the next one shorter by the same amount |
| Move clip (slide) | U | A clip | The clip moves between its neighbours; they shorten and lengthen around it |
| Shift footage (slip) | Y | A clip | Another part of the footage plays in the same place |
| Select | V | Back to normal selecting, trimming and moving |
While you drag
- The timeline shows the result as it will be saved: the clips, the titles, overlays and captions on them, and the marker pins.
- The ruler says what changes.
- Esc puts everything back. Release to keep it.
What moves with it
| Tool | Titles, overlays and captions on the clips |
|---|---|
| Move cut | Items on the footage that leaves are cut off or removed; nothing else moves |
| Move clip | Items on the moved clip move with it. Items on footage it now covers are cut off or removed |
| Shift footage | Items on the clip move with its footage, and are cut at the clip's edges. Sound is never cut; it keeps its time |
6 more details
- Move clip needs a clip on both sides. Shift footage works on video and sound: titles and photos have no footage to shift.
- The clip's own separated sound shifts with it, so it stays in sync.
- Markers keep their time with these three tools: none of them changes the video's length.
- An item you locked stops the edit, and the message says which one.
- The AI uses the same edits, with the same rules.
- More keys: Keyboard shortcuts.
