How it works
- Edivo makes the picture of every export on your graphics card when it can: MP4, MOV and WebM, HDR, and exports in another size, shape or frame rate.
- If the graphics card can't, Edivo makes it without the graphics card by itself. Same picture; it takes longer.
- For MP4s, Settings › Speed in the export sheet offers Fastest (the usual; the file can be bigger) or Smallest file (takes longer). See the table.
- Fastest uses the video encoder of an NVIDIA graphics card. Edivo tests it once on this computer. Without one that works, Fastest makes the same file as Smallest file.
When Speed shows
| Export | Picture made on the graphics card | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| MP4 in the video's own size, shape and frame rate | Shown | |
| MP4 in another size, shape or frame rate (for example 9:16 from a 16:9 edit, or the 720p review copy) | Yes, then converted | Shown |
| MP4 with HDR | Yes, then converted | Not shown |
| MOV (ProRes) or WebM | Yes, with the format's own encoder | Not shown |
| Sound only (MP3, WAV) | No picture | Not shown |
What the Speed note says
| Note under Speed › Fastest | Means |
|---|---|
| "Made on your graphics card. The file can be bigger." | A graphics-card encoder passed its test on this computer |
| "Your graphics card isn't used here, so this is the same as Smallest file." | No NVIDIA encoder works here: the standard encoder makes the file |
| "Uses your graphics card when it can. The file can be bigger." | Edivo hasn't tested the encoders on this computer yet |
If a GPU export fails
- Press See why on the stopped export.
- Update your graphics driver, then Try again.
- If it keeps failing, Report a problem…. The report includes your graphics card, its driver and the engine used by the last export.
4 more details
- A graphics card helps but is not needed. Tools such as background removal use it when there is one, and the processor when not.
- Settings › Diagnostics shows the media tools with details to copy.
- If Fastest's graphics-card encoder fails during an export, Edivo makes the file again with the standard encoder by itself. The export's diagnostics (part of a problem report) say which encoder ran.
- Intel (Quick Sync) and AMD video encoders are not used for now: on those computers the standard encoder makes the file.
